‘Tis the Season to be Jolly: 6 Tips for Less Stress This Season

December 15, 2016

It’s mid-December and the holidays are basically here. If you’re anything like me, it takes a while to get into the groove of things, and I fall a little behind on “holiday spirit” – putting up decorations, making cookies, hoping my online orders arrive in time. This time of year has everyone doing more than usual both in and out of the office!

Here are some suggestions for organizations and employees to help make the season a little less stressful and a little more jolly.

Prioritize your work. With time off, holiday vacations, and more flexible hours this time of year, normal deadlines and project timelines can change. Make sure to plan in advance. Create a calendar with lists of what needs to be achieved and when. It’ll feel great checking off all you’ve completed and going into days off feeling accomplished!

Show your appreciation. Now is the time, more than ever, to say thank you to your teammates, leaders, and employees. 2016 is wrapping up and they need to know that their yearlong hard work is appreciated. A simple card or email can be pretty meaningful, especially this time of year.

Give back. Volunteering in the community is not only very rewarding, but also much needed. There are many organizations that need help around the holidays. Whether it’s sponsoring a child in need or serving at a soup kitchen, helping others puts things into perspective. Our organization organizes a company-matched charitable donation each December. It’s one of several ways we give back throughout the year.

Spread the holiday cheer. Here at Next Level, some teammates decorate their desk areas with lights, tinsel, and seasonal embellishments. It’s a fun way to get into the spirit of the season and to take your mind off of everything that’s going on. Organizations could even run a contest where teammates vote on the best-decorated office, awarding points to the winner.

Rest and Recharge (Important). Whether it’s spending time with family, a tropical vacation, or an at home “staycation,” don’t miss out on the time to enjoy the festivities, all you are thankful for, and some relaxation – and maybe some eggnog! But don’t forget to celebrate with colleagues as well. Workplace connections and partnerships are an important part of a thriving community.

Bonus: Work Gift Exchange. Give the option to participate in a little fun with the people you work with every day. A company white elephant or secret Santa offers a great opportunity to build relationships and connects the company to its people. A little fun goes a long way in keeping everyone engaged.

Embrace the madness of the season, try not to let the little things get to you, enjoy all of the holiday spirit, and take the opportunity to build camaraderie with your teammates. But most of all, celebrate and have a happy holiday!
