Gartner’s Message for CSOs: AI is an Accelerator, Not the Engine
Every conference seems to have an AI theme these days, but what struck me in Sales & Marketing Management Magazine’s Special Report on the Gartner CSO & Sales Leader Conference was how little the conversation was actually about technology.

Instead, Gartner's message was surprisingly human.
Across multiple sessions, analysts emphasized that AI isn't the answer to productivity challenges. It's an accelerator. Organizations seeing the strongest results aren't simply deploying more AI tools. They're improving how work gets done, reducing friction, and helping sellers and managers focus on activities that actually drive revenue. Gartner's view was clear: AI amplifies whatever environment it enters. If your processes are effective, AI can accelerate performance. If they're inefficient, AI simply helps you move through the inefficiency faster.
For Chief Sales Officers, that's an important distinction.
Many organizations have invested heavily in technology, yet sales teams continue to face longer buying cycles, growing complexity, and increasing pressure to deliver results. Gartner challenged leaders to stop thinking of productivity as an activity problem and start treating it as a systems problem. Better decisions, stronger coaching, and improved infrastructure create better outcomes. AI helps scale those advantages.
One area where this mindset is especially relevant is sales incentives.
The best incentive programs aren't occasional contests or end-of-quarter pushes. They become part of the daily sales rhythm. They provide clarity, reinforce priorities, and help people understand what success looks like. When designed well, they don't just reward performance. They help shape it.
Data has always been part of that equation. Nearly every organization has more performance data than it knows what to do with. The challenge is turning information into action.
This is where AI can create real value. It can help identify patterns more quickly, surface trends earlier, and highlight opportunities leaders might otherwise miss. But insight alone doesn't change behavior. People do.
That's why the human side of performance remains so important.
Throughout the conference, Gartner repeatedly emphasized the importance of judgment, coaching, and manager effectiveness. Technology can support those efforts, but it doesn't replace them. In many ways, the future of sales leadership may depend less on artificial intelligence and more on how effectively leaders combine AI with human intelligence.

At Next Level Performance, we see that every day through our Amplify platform.
Amplify gives organizations visibility into the behaviors that drive performance, from learning engagement and campaign participation to incentive progress and recognition activity. Leaders gain a clearer understanding of how their teams are engaging with key initiatives and where support may be needed. Better visibility leads to better decisions.
AI can then build on that foundation by helping leaders spot trends faster and focus attention where it will have the greatest impact.
But even the most sophisticated technology can't replace what ultimately motivates people. Recognition, achievement, belonging, and purpose continue to influence performance in ways algorithms alone cannot.
That may be the biggest takeaway from Gartner's research.
The organizations succeeding with AI are not replacing human expertise. They're creating systems where technology enhances it. They are simplifying complexity, increasing visibility, and helping people make better decisions. AI provides speed and scale. People provide judgment, context, and leadership.
For CSOs navigating the next phase of growth, that's encouraging news. The future doesn't belong to organizations with the most AI tools. It belongs to organizations that combine great technology with great leadership, clear priorities, and a deep understanding of what drives human performance.
