Where in the World is Cheryl? Reflections from SITE Classic in Puerto Rico

I recently had the opportunity to attend SITE Classic in Puerto Rico, joining industry peers for several days of destination exploration, meaningful conversation, and shared learning. For our team, experiences like this offer another opportunity to see a destination through the lens of the incentive travel programs we help create, where every element should support recognition, connection, and motivation for participants.

Experiencing Puerto Rico's Evolution

SITE Classic offered a meaningful opportunity to see how Puerto Rico continues to evolve as a meetings and incentive travel destination. For companies considering where to host future incentive travel programs, that kind of firsthand perspective is valuable. A destination may be familiar by name, but the guest experience can change significantly as properties are renovated, infrastructure improves, and new opportunities emerge for creating a stronger participant experience.

This year's event was hosted at El Conquistador Resort, a property that has long been a fixture in Puerto Rico's meetings and events landscape. Following years of closure and redevelopment, the resort has undergone a remarkable transformation. The revitalized guestrooms, refreshed meeting space, and renewed energy throughout the property showed how a legacy resort can preserve what makes it memorable while reintroducing itself in a way that feels current and ready for future programs.

Palomino Island offered a similar takeaway. The enhancements to the dock, ferry service, island amenities, and gathering spaces were immediately noticeable, improving the arrival experience and creating a stronger sense of ease for guests. For incentive programs, those operational details matter. They can shape how participants move through an experience, how relaxed they feel, and how memorable the destination becomes.

Throughout the week, Puerto Rico served as more than just the backdrop for the event. Its hospitality, culture, and continued investment in tourism and meetings infrastructure pointed to a larger reminder for companies building incentive travel programs: the right destination should support the full participant experience, from arrival and accommodations to moments of connection, celebration, and recognition.

Celebrating Local Culture

That sense of place carried throughout the program, with Puerto Rico’s culture woven into moments both large and small. The opening gifting experience was organized as a marketplace, featuring a blend of local artisans and recognized brands. From locally sourced coffee to handcrafted jewelry made from repurposed guitar strings, the experience showed how gifting can do more than welcome attendees. When thoughtfully designed, it can introduce the destination, support local makers, and create an immediate connection to the culture around them.

The event concluded with a celebration on Palomino Island, where attendees enjoyed traditional bomba music and dance performances. It was a strong example of how cultural programming can feel authentic when it is connected to the setting instead of treated as a standalone activity. Those details helped the experience feel specific to Puerto Rico and gave attendees a more meaningful way to engage with the destination.

Connection & Education

SITE Classic’s roundtable education sessions created space for industry professionals to share perspective, exchange ideas, and discuss what is shaping incentive travel today. Those conversations added practical context to the destination experience, offering a clearer view of how companies can think about participant expectations, program design, and the value of bringing people together in a memorable setting.

Final Reflections

For companies considering incentive travel, SITE Classic showed how Puerto Rico continues to deliver as a destination that feels both polished and personal. Its renewed properties, improved infrastructure, cultural programming, and hospitality all worked together to create an experience that felt seamless, distinctive, and meaningful for attendees. For decision-makers, that is the real takeaway: a strong destination should do more than look appealing on paper. It should help create the kind of experience participants remember long after the program ends.

Next Level View

The best incentive travel programs are built around destinations that can support the full experience, not just the itinerary. Puerto Rico offers companies a compelling mix of renewed hospitality, cultural depth, and memorable settings that can make recognition feel more personal and impactful.
